Conclusion – which Mi-Fi router is best?
Mi-Fi is the easiest, most costeffective Internet solution for coastal use, but most Mi-Fis need recharging after 8-10 hours of use and are vulnerable to weather. Wabnet overcomes these issues.
The TP Link was blisteringly fast in a good 4G reception area. 4G is desirable, but it’s designed for high-density spots, which you don’t get out at sea. Also, once 4G reaches normal capacity, the providers are likely to reduce the synchronization time-outs and its range will drop drastically. Thus the ability to automatically fall back on slower networks (2G, Edge, 3G, etc) is essential.
For use on coastal passages, consider Wabnet. But for use in anchorages with 4G coverage, you could do better by fitting a 4G Mi-Fi in a waterproof case, powered with a USB cable.
