Satellite communications hub

We all expect to keep in touch nowadays but if you’re out of mobile range the only practical way forward is using satcoms. Global Telesat’s new Sat-Fi enables users with a smartphone (or any other WiFi enabled device) to connect to the hub and use their devices like normal. The Sat-Fi system has a base station, which is powered by 12V DC, and an external aerial (which needs a clear view of the sky).

Once installed, you download the Sat-Fi app and connect to the unit via Wi-Fi. The phone is then linked to the Globalstar satellite network for both voice and data calls. Call clarity is said to be excellent and data speeds around 9.6kbps (claimed to be four times faster than its rivals) can be achieved.

Up to eight users can connect at a time. Airtime plans for voice and data start at €25 a month with a one-off activation fee of €50. Extra ‘out-of-bundle’ call time or data is available for as little as €0.60 per minute.
