Cornish flotilla to tackle marine litter
Sailors across the UK are being encouraged to do their bit during World Cleanup Day on 15 September and fill a bag with marine rubbish.
The call comes from the Cornish community action group Clean Ocean Sailing, which is organising a flotilla of traditional sailing boats to collect marine litter from the Helford River and Falmouth Bay.
Yachts from local sailing clubs, sailing schools and the marine service industry will join them, with the skippers deploying crew on tenders or kayaks to gather rubbish. Others will row ashore.
Co-founder of Clean Ocean Sailing Steve Green, whose 110-year-old Danish 66ft gaff- rigged schooner Annette will be part of the flotilla, is also asking sailors from further afield ‘to fill a bag with marine waste plastic on that day, weigh and photograph it with you and your boat and share it with us on social media’ on the group’s Facebook page.
