Lying between St Malo and Dinard is the River Rance. There’s a whole other world to explore on the other side of the Rance Tidal Barrage – the first (and until recently the biggest) tidal power station in the world when it opened in 1966. The lower part of the Rance can be reached through a lock in the barrage (VHF Channel 13 to check times) and has several peaceful anchorages – a recommended spot being between Pointe Thon and Pointe Garel. Watch out for strong currents created when the sluice gates are opened. Shallowdrafted vessels (under 1.5m) can head upriver to the lock at Le Châtelier and on up to Dinan, with marinas at Plouër, Lyvet
(Le Châtelier) and Dinan.
