2022 Golden Globe announced

Yachting Monthly - - NEWS -

As the current Golden Globe Race (GGR) skippers continue to head south, details of the next race are beginning to emerge.

GGR 2022 is confirmed to start on 11 September 2022 in France, with both a Suhaili and Joshua Class. There will be an event in the UK ahead of the start. The Suhaili class, which is limited to 20 entrants, will be exactly the same as the current race, with skippers sailing pre-1998 production yachts. Once again, apart from safety gear, entrants can only use similar equipment that was onboard Suhaili in the original 1968-69 race. The Joshua Class will see entrants racing one-design yachts modelled on Bernard Moitessier’s Joshua, which are expected to be built in Turkey, and can be bought with qualifying equipment preinstalled.

There are tougher entry rules, with skippers having to complete a new 1,000 mile solo non-stop passage in their GGR boat by 22 August 2022, using only celestial navigation, as well as 4,000 ocean sailing miles. AIS will be compulsory on all boats and an extra film drop point will be added at Cape Town.

The Joshua Class yacht will be made of steel
