FIRST AID AT SEA
Douglas Justins and Colin Berry, Adlard Coles
The seventh edition of this handy reference guide has much to commend it, not least its stiff, waterproof pages enabling immediate use on deck. It’s easy to navigate and to comprehend, even when the first aider might be feeling stressed. There’s a useful decision-making flow chart and the DON’TS are as clear as the DOS; if chest compressions are needed, ‘DON’T Panic / Be shy / Stop’. It’s endorsed by the RORC and this may explain some of its omissions. There are many more health issues (premature labour, for instance), which can become emergencies when cruising. I think I’d want to supplement this guide with something more comprehensive available for consultation in the cabin.
