Awards for Golden Globe Race skippers
The Cruising Club of America has honoured two Golden Globe Race skippers. The winner of the 2018 race, Jean-luc Van Den Heede, was presented with the club’s 2019 Blue Water Medal. He finished the race in just under 212 days aboard his Rustler 36, Matmut, despite a damaged mast caused when the yacht pitchpoled in the Southern Ocean.
Gregor Mcguckin was named the winner of the Rod Stephens Seamanship Trophy for his attempted rescue of fellow race skipper Abhilash Tomy, despite his yacht being dismasted in a Southern Ocean storm.
