Toilet-train your seadog

- Graham Snook

Dogs can adapt well to life on board a yacht, but like all animals they do need to go to the toilet. While a trip ashore in the dinghy a couple of times a day is no hardship most of the time, if you want to cruise further and for longer without being tied to toilet stops, you can train your dog to do their business on a patch or two of Astroturf.

You’ll need to fashion a way to attach the turf to your deck as not even the bravest dog will go on a patch of plastic grass sliding around a plane of fibreglass, and it’s best if the attachments are ‘safe’ away from the turf. Having a smaller piece for use in the cockpit when it’s rough also makes sense. You can just drag them behind the yacht while sailing to give them a clean – the Astroturf, that is, not the dogs!
