WE SHIFTED OUR FAMILY LIFE ONTO THE WATER

Mary and I had been sailing a cruiser for five years before our first daughter was born, so both she and her younger sister just had to fit in with our routine, which they accepted as a natural state of affairs. In essence, we simply shifted our family life onto the water at weekends and holidays. That approach seems to have worked very well because both girls are now extremely keen sailors. Ken Endean

EMBRACING A LIVEABOARD LIFE HAS BEEN AMAZING

My husband and I had never even owned a boat when we decided to take a two-year cruising sabbatical in the Caribbean. We bought a Moody 47, sightunseen from the opposite side of the world and headed off on what was to become the best thing we ever did. Fortunately, we pulled through relatively unscathed, and had some amazing experiences with our three young boys. Erin Carey

WE WENT BACK TO BASICS

Family sailing has only been on the agenda since acquiring Bounty’s End, the replica open launch that Lieutenant Bligh was cast adrift in during the mutiny on the Bounty. She has no galley, heads or shower but the pace of the boat is very slow, which appeals to my family. We explore rivers, salt marshes and places beyond the tidal limits. I carry a small tent or we make up a bimini shelter for overnight camps, often by the riverside with a small fire to keep us warm through the night. Conrad Humphreys
