Which fabric is best for cushion covers?

THE BIG QUESTION

-

Q We have just bought a Sparkman & Stephens 34 and the interior cushion covers really need replacing. What is the best fabric to use? I want to be able to easily wash the covers and get them back on again. Do you have any washing tips to prevent shrinking?

There is such a wealth of fabrics to choose from. My advice would be to focus on the technical specification of the fabric – the big four factors to consider are:

UV Resistance: it should be grade 7-8 for a quality yacht upholstery fabric. Due to the high intensity rays which penetrate the port holes, any grade less can strip the colour from the fibre causing fade.

Water permeability: waterproof fabrics are the best choice. Think about the damp bottoms, the children and spillages which can occur on a yacht! Without a waterproof fabric, liquids can drain into the foam insert encouraging mould and mildew build up.

Abrasion resistance: Yacht cushions need to resist abrasion. All regulated fabrics go through a rub test, known as the Martindale test. Anything above 50,000 rubs is recommended for multipurpose upholstery.

Maintenance: many polyester-based fabrics are now bleach cleanable! It’s best to clean with the foam insert still inside, which is possible with waterproof fabric. Warm soapy solution with a small amount of bleach will bring your cushions back to their former glory. Many fabrics have a barrier treatment, which could be removed when wiping, so remember to treat the cushion once dry with a barrier agent.
