WAVES AND BEACHES (3RD EDITION)
Willard Bascom and Kim Mccoy, Patagonia
A beautiful and intellectually stimulating book. The phenomenon of waves is explored scientifically through oceanographic experiments and equations, but also conceptually. Think of tides as long waveforms; consider climate change as a wave. Geology is compellingly presented as matter in a state of flux; explanations of the interrelationship of sea and coast are powerful, fascinating and highly relevant. This study was first published in 1963, updated in 1979 and has been brought into the 21st century by Kim Mccoy. Examples are global but passages of direct experience ensure personal immediacy. It will enhance sailing experience and observations as well as stimulating wider understanding of the great environmental challenge of our time.
