Uncertainties over travel to sunny destinations have resulted in a big boost to boat sales. For many prospective owners it may seem the obvious move is to buy a boat of a similar style to those enjoyed on charter holidays in the past.

However, a big boat with masses of accommodation may not be the best option – smaller less complex craft are often more fun to sail, easier to maintain and more suited to the small berths found in many UK and north European harbours.

The Dutch Saffier yard has produced some of the most exquisite day sailers and weekenders of recent years – it is already sold out for 2022 with over 100 boats ordered!

Its new Se 33 Life is an exciting design with relatively narrow beam and flared sections aft to minimise wetted surface area, making for a boat that will be rewarding to sail even in very light breezes, while the hefty torpedo bulb helps provide stability in stronger winds.

All sail controls on the new model are led back to the helm stations for easy single-handing and the single rudder is tucked reasonably well forward of the disturbed water near the transom. Twin wheels with comfortable upholstered seats, plus a large sunbed aft hint at an ability for both serious sailing and leisurely relaxation. An optional low-profile windscreen will help keep spray where it belongs.

There’s a civilised interior with a high standard of finish. Granted, headroom in the very open plan layout is restricted, but there’s a double berth and heads area forward, small galley complete with coffee machine amidships, plus two long settees aft.
