BOATS OF NOTE RACING YACHTS

-

Eco Racer 25

The Eco Racer 25 is a yacht that aims to be a lot more than just an eco oddity. This is a yacht that boasts not only excellent green credentials but has also proven itself to be a polished performer on the ORC racing circuit, picking up first place overall in the Italian Miniaultra series. The boat is 7.69m LOA and is designed by noted naval architect Matteo Polli, who has enjoyed success in recent years with the Italia 9.98 among others. The Eco Racer is built using alternative materials such as thermos-plastic resins and flax laminates. The result is a light boat at 1,100kg with a relatively narrow, easily-driven hull. Styling is dramatic with stepped spray rails slashing across the hull, while the single rudder is placed notably far forward.

Aeolos P30

The Aeolos P30 is an unashamedly performance orientated 30 footer. As is so often the case with intriguingly original designs, she is the distillation of one sailor’s idea of the perfect racer. In this case it’s German sailor and designer Hans Genthe – probably best known as a previous winner of the Silverudder singlehanded race - which is a big deal in Denmark. So Genthe is a big noise in the Baltic and he has therefore designed a boat optimised for these conditions, the result being the P30. This 30 footer is absurdly light at 1,500kg with a heavily rockered hull which helps it deal well with a short chop and minimises wetted surface area.

ClubSwan 43

Nautor Swan has been one of the few boatbuilders able to successfully retain a healthy one design racing fleet, with large numbers of ClubSwan 50s and 36s pitting their wits against each other on a level playing field. Now the ClubSwan 43 promises to fill the size gap between these two. The new boat is designed by Juan Kouyoumdjian and was initially positioned as a 41 footer however, this was changed to a 43 in order to comply with ORC regulations. The new boat is seen as more of a crossover yacht than the foiling ClubSwan 36 and the amped-up ClubSwan 50. The boat leans slightly more towards fast cruising, featuring three double cabins. For all that, this promises to be a seriously fast boat.

Ino Noir Carkeek 45

Ino Noir is certainly a boat that looks the part, decked out in an eye catching and rather lustrous crimson paint job. The boat features the now well known Carkeek chamfered foredeck which, married to reverse sheer, makes the boat look like it’s going fast even when at rest. In terms of design, the boat reflects Carkeek’s desire to optimise the boat for offshore racing. Weight has been kept to a modest 5,000kg and there is a water ballast system which can transfer the water with great rapidity to improve tacking performance.
