MARINE ART
Two rare paintings
Brixham based John Chancellor (1925-1984) is considered one of the finest marine painters of his generation. His career was cut short with his death aged 59 and there are only 150 paintings in existence. To find two on offer in Totnes is a rare event. On offer is an oil, ‘Fishing Boat out of Brixham’ (above left) depicting a Brixham Mule battling a heaving swell off Start Point. Chancellor spent most of his life at the helm of merchant vessels. Also on show is a watercolour titled Punching Westward (above right), featuring a French Grand Banks barquentines beating across the Atlantic bound for the Newfounland Banks. Both paintings are on show at Davidson Fine Art, 22 High Street, Totnes.
The oil is £24,000 and the watercolour is £8,500.

Photo symphony
French and Persian artist Sina Vodjani, now resident of Hamburg, describes himself as a “photographer, painter, musician, composer, globetrotter, sailor”. His art “embodies versatility in all aspects….the art of visualising vibrance in spacetime…”
His topics range vastly. These two nautical works are made using photography, digital editing and hand painting, resulting in an ethereal, shimmering effect. vodjani.com

These rustic wall-hangings are by inventive German artist Thomas Froehlich from Saxony, who also makes grander items, including tables, outdoor sculptures, indoor and outdoor tables, even sculpted grills for your barbecue. The classic anchor and line is made using stainless steel and locust tree wood, while for the compass piece he uses reclaimed wood. Anker mit Tau €125 (anchor), Windrose mit Tau €750 (compass) kontrastwerke.de
Sailing Collage
Inspired by the expressionist paintings of the 20th century, German artist Heinke Boehnert creates nautical collages utilising cast-off sails on oil painting. The result is an intriguing 3D, textured effect that brings the yachting scenes to life. She is of course a sailor herself and has a range of regatta scenes to view on her website.
