Creative director who loves to give cars his very own personal touch

A love of cars which began at an early age Rich still endures for Colvill, creative director at Leeds-based Agency TK.

From as early as I can remember I have been surrounded by cars. Growing up, my dad was always restoring or building cars from scratch in his spare time, from AC Cobras to a Racing Coomb Jaguar MK11, he loved the detail and so did I.

You could say I am a true petrolhead and I completely blame my dad for both igniting and fuelling my obsession with motoring.

My first car was a very standard MKII Fiesta when I was 17 and was definitely the start of my passion. Just like I had seen my dad do many times, I took the car and decided to make it mine.

I gave it a full makeover and changed the interior completely; I added a different kit, new wheels, suspension and changed the colour.

It was a real turning point and definitely the start of things to come.

Whilst I am a sucker for most cars, my real love is Porsches and in particular the 911. I am currently working on my 11th and I still haven’t strayed.

I have owned many over the years and each one has been modified, re-created and then sold on.

I put design over purism. I want a car I can stand and look at because of its details rather than how it was intended.

Don’t get me wrong, I do love the originals but I wouldn’t be able to keep it pure for long.

I am a designer, so I find it impossible to leave it as it is – there is always an improvement to be made in my eyes.

If I had to choose my dream car it’s an easy choice, and I would go for a Bugatti Chiron, but from a design perspective I would opt for a Lamborghini Miura.

It’s a pretty unbeatable car when it comes to design and I also love the ethos of Lamborghini – originally a tractor maker who was upset with his Ferrari and so he decided to show them how it should be done.

That really resonates with me and my creative side.

I love my modifications and creating beautiful cars both inside and out.

The interiors deserve just as much love as the outside.

But for now, I don’t think I will ever tire of my Porsches and like Ferdinand Porsche said: “It’s the car that nobody needs, but everybody wants.”
