Busi­ness­man, politi­cian and states­man Fran­cis Arthur Cock­field died. Of­ten re­ferred to as ‘the fa­ther of Sin­gle Mar­ket’, he was a mem­ber of the Euro­pean Com­mis­sion be­tween 1984 and 1988. Prior to this he was a civil ser­vant, a com­pany di­rec­tor and a Con­ser­va­tive politi­cian who served as Min­is­ter of State at the Trea­sury from 1979 to 1982, Sec­re­tary of State for Trade from 1982 un­til 1983, and as Chan­cel­lor of the Duchy of Lan­caster from 1983 un­til 1984.
