THE Stan­ley and Au­drey Bur­ton Gallery at Leeds Uni­ver­sity is host­ing a fan­tas­tic new ex­hi­bi­tion this month. Beard­s­ley and the Book Il­lus­tra­tors, which runs at the gallery un­til Fe­bru­ary, ex­plores the work of Aubrey Beard­s­ley.

The artist, who was born in Brighton in 1872 and died aged just 25, is famed for his in­tri­cately made black and white il­lus­tra­tions which of­ten pic­ture dark scenes. The ex­hi­bi­tion cel­e­brates the life and of­ten con­tro­ver­sial work of the pre­co­cious ge­nius who suc­cumbed to tu­ber­cu­lo­sis.
