Mario Merz (1925-2003) grew up in Turin, un­der Mus­solini’s regime.

He was im­pris­oned for a year in 1942 for his an­tifas­cist views and be­gan draw­ing in 1945 while in­car­cer­ated, draw­ing por­traits.

He pro­gressed from paint­ing into sculp­ture in the early 1960s. Merz’s last UK ex­hi­bi­tion was in 1983.
