LIFF part of the Os­car process

LEEDS In­ter­na­tional Film Fes­ti­val is go­ing to the Os­cars – sort of.

The event, which comes to a close on Sun­day, has been ac­cepted as a qual­i­fy­ing event for the Os­cars. The Academy of Mo­tion Pic­ture Arts and Sciences, which or­gan­ises the world’s most fa­mous awards cer­e­mony cel­e­brat­ing ex­cel­lence in cinema, con­tacted the or­gan­is­ers of the LIFF this week to con­firm it has been ap­proved to be­come part of the Academy Awards process. It means win­ners in some of the Leeds cat­e­gories at the Leeds fest will qual­ify for the film world’s big­gest prize.
