For this production of Albert Herring, the cast and orchestra will be mainly drawn from the music department’s third year students.
In Britten’s opera, Albert hasn’t had much of a life tied to his mother’s apron strings and working with her in the greengrocery shop, but things are about to change when the town is unable to find a young female virgin to become the May Queen, the gullible young man is nominated as the May King.
There is already a major career awaiting the tenor, Richard Pinkstone, who is taking the part of Albert. Now studying at London’s Royal Academy of Music, where he hopes to be joined next year by three other York colleagues who are taking part in the performance, there is some serious talent int he cast.
Filled with the stock characters of village life, the story is dominated by the formidable Lady Billows, sung here by Eleanor Dann, the local Superintendent Budd (Timothy Ferguson), and the irascible, Sid and his girlfriend, Nancy (Jake Muffett and Ana Beard-Fernandez), who take Albert to spend his May King prize money on a night out – or did he?
Alice Wright is the producer and John Stringer conducts the University Chamber Ensemble.
Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall, York University May 7, 7pm (please note starting time). To book tickets call 01904 322439 or online at www. yorkconcerts.co.uk
