Bill Nelson – My Secret Studio Volume 1

The art rock band Be-Bop Deluxe might have earned Wakefield-born singer and guitarist Bill Nelson a brush with the top 20 in the pre-punk era but his enigmatic solo work since the early 1980s has had more niche appeal. My Secret Studio – Vol 1 is a reissue by the Cherry Red offshoot Esoteric Recordings of a box set Nelson originally put out in 1995. Attractively packaged in a clambox, it comprises four albums’ worth of material that he demo-ed for development with a potential band. For “various and nefarious reasons” that band may never have materialised but Nelson’s highly distinctive guitar-playing and songwriting highlights such as Killing My Desires, She’s So Extreme and Snowing Outside make this intriguing listening.
