Porsche unveils new version of 911 Carrera
THIS is the new Porsche 911 Carrera, in showrooms this December after a September debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The engines are cleaner and more powerful, in the tail of a body which now has a mix of steel and aluminium components. A four-inch longer wheel base gives the stiffer body better stability and more cabin space.
The gearbox is the world’s first seven-speed manual shift, and the PDK automatic now has a coasting function. This, and other measures reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
The exterior design is a subtle evolution of the classic car. It is slightly lower but otherwise a similar size, with the front and rear overhangs shortened by the longer wheel base. That and the wider front track and new rear axle promises even sharper handling. Prices are some £4,000 higher for the 3.4 Carrera, which replaces the 3.6 model, and £5,000 higher for the 3.8 Carrera S.
Both engines have increased power. The £71, 449 Carrera 3.4 delivers 345bhp and a 0-62mph time of 4.6 seconds. When fitted with the extra- cost PDK automatic gearbox it averages 34.4mpg (up by 6 mpg) and at 194g/km is the first Porsche sports model to beat the 200g/km target. The £81,242 Carrera S has 394.4bhp for a 0-62mph time of of 4.3 seconds.
