IT IS: Long awaited diesel ver­sion of the MG lift­back.In July and Au­gust all MGs are be­ing of­fered VAT-free which means from £12,967 for a petrol GT and from £17,987 for the diesel Mag­nette.

DIESEL POWER: De­vel­ops 148bhp and 258 lb ft of torque.

ECON­OMY: Town 46mpg, out of town, 59mpg, over­all 53.5mpg. On test: 47mpg over­all, 56mpg out of town.

VER­DICT: Good econ­omy but the car has too many de­fi­cien­cies to put it on my short­list.

ORI­GINS: Most parts are sourced in China, with many from joint ven­tures com­pa­nies. Spe­cific Bri­tish/ Euro­pean parts are some of the elec­tric com­po­nents (Bosch), some sus­pen­sion parts (ZF), some tyres/wheels. Body panels and many larger com­po­nents: the engine and gear­box are China sourced but are UK de­signed and the en­gi­neer­ing de­vel­op­ment of th­ese and the whole car is car­ried out at SAIC s Euro­pean Tech­ni­cal Cen­tre next to the newly ex­tended De­sign Cen­tre. To­tal UK staff at the MG Birm­ing­ham site is just over 400.
