THE FACTS AND FIGURES
IT IS: Long awaited diesel version of the MG liftback. In July and August all MGs are being offered VAT-free which means from £12,967 for a petrol GT and from £17,987 for the diesel Magnette.
DIESEL POWER: Develops 148bhp and 258 lb ft of torque.
ECONOMY: Town 46mpg, out of town, 59mpg, overall 53.5mpg. On test: 47mpg overall, 56mpg out of town.
VERDICT: Good economy but the car has too many deficiencies to put it on my shortlist.
ORIGINS: Most parts are sourced in China, with many from joint ventures companies. Specific British/ European parts are some of the electric components (Bosch), some suspension parts (ZF), some tyres/wheels. Body panels and many larger components: the engine and gearbox are China sourced but are UK designed and the engineering development of these and the whole car is carried out at SAIC s European Technical Centre next to the newly extended Design Centre. Total UK staff at the MG Birmingham site is just over 400.
