A first on this model is the adap­tive air sus­pen­sion which has five dif­fer­ent set­tings to suit all driv­ing and body styles. It al­lows the ride height to be low­ered by 20mm – mak­ing the RS6 more aero­dy­namic as well as giv­ing it a more pur­pose­ful stance.

But at price close on £78,000 you’d ex­pect a num­ber of vis­ual ooh, aah mo­ments and there are plenty of those. Sports seats, flat bot­tomed three-spoke multi-func­tion steer­ing wheel, il­lu­mi­nated en­try sills and the op­tional but very cool heads-up dis­play which not only puts the speed di­rectly in the driver’s eye-line but also in­cludes satel­lite nav­i­ga­tion in­struc­tions.

The RS6 Avant will be the star turn in show­rooms from next month.

FIR­ING ON ALL CYLIN­DERS: The pow­er­ful V8 engine of the RS6 Avant can be­come a V4 at low revs, sav­ing on fuel and emis­sions.
