This 1920s property is the perfect family home
ALMSFORD House is one of the most prestigious properties in Harrogate but for the owners its value is measured in happy family memories.
Stuart and Joan Littlejohn bought the house 30 years ago and its size was a big attraction as the couple have six children.
“We had relocated and were looking for a large house in an area with good schools and this was perfect,” says Mrs Littlejohn.
“It’s also in a wonderful location with countryside at one end of the lane, where the children could play safely, and a road with a bus route into town at the other so they could have some independence when they were older.”
Built in the 1920s, the house still has a host of period features, including leaded windows set in stone mullions, period fireplaces and oak panelling.
Over the years, the Littlejohns have modernised the kitchen and bathrooms and they recently created a new garage with games room above.
The property has an inner vestibule with cloakroom and guest WC, a large formal reception hall that extends to a spacious drawing room, which can be separated by bi-folding partitioning. Also branching from the reception hall is a formal dining room and kitchen, which leads through to the breakfast room and separate utility.
There is also an additional reception room, which could be adapted as a children’s playroom or study.
On the first floor, there are five double bedrooms, two bathrooms and a walk-in linen cupboard. The master bedroom extends to a large dressing room with bank of built-in wardrobes.
The second floor has a large open landing space, two double bedrooms, a shower room, box room and attic storage. Outside, there is a detached garage with workshop, WC, and a games room above. The sweeping driveway provides parking and there are large gardens and a sun terrace.
Although their children are now grown-up, the Littlejohns have seven grandchildren who love to visit their grandparents’ home.
“They love it here, especially the garden where they can climb trees and make dens,” says Mrs Littlejohn, who is selling to downsize.
She adds: “We have been very happy here and it’s been a very happy home, which is why we have stayed so long, but it is time for us to move on.”
Almsford House in Harrogate is a prestige property, but it’s also the perfect family home, with large gardens to play in.
