“The structural work was relatively easy because the house is a timber frame construction and we were lucky to have a brilliant builder and joiner,” he says.
Furniture and furnishings are a mix of items they have collected over the years, including a fabulous rosewood and leather sofa that cost £500, 40 years ago.
“People thought we were mad as it was a huge amount of money but it has lasted and we have had it recovered,” says Sandra.
Instead of curtains for the bedrooms, they splashed out on three sets of shutters, which cost £1,670.
Altogether, the project took about two years and cost £40,000. The extension alone was about £30,000, but it has had a life changing effect.
The space, natural light and restful, long range views in the extension have helped inspire Tony to take up painting.
He went to art college after leaving school and specialised in sculpture before pursuing a career in advertising, which included running his own ad. agency and business consultancy.
“I hadn’t picked up a paint brush in 40 years and wondered whether I could still paint.
“It felt great and now I paint most days and I’ve done 25 canvases in the last 12 months,” he says.
Sandra persuaded him to submit some of his pictures to the Great North Art Show at Ripon Cathedral, which opens on August 31, and they were accepted.
“That felt amazing but it’s all down to this room,” he says. “It’s a great joy.”
