The Old Police House, South View, Ripley. Price: £695,000. Contact: Buchanan Mitchell, tel: 01423 360055, www. buchananmitchell.com IT’S easy to see why Bronwen Harlow fell in love with this historic house, a classic Ripley stone property built in the early 19th century which is steeped in charm and history.

Homes rarely come for sale in the estate village, near Harrogate, so Bronwen seized her chance when the property came up for sale in 1992.

“We lived in a small cottage and were looking for somewhere bigger when we saw a tiny advert for the house in the local paper. It was serendipitous.

“I called straight away and arranged to view it and as soon as I walked through the door I could feel the warm and welcoming atmosphere. It just wraps itself around you,” says Bronwen, who was also bowled over by the large garden, which proved perfect for her two sons.

The grade two listed property served as the local police house until 1960 and while previous owners had carried out some modernisation, Bronwen and her family picked up the baton and continued to make many more improvements.

“It had utility room and separate kitchen, which we combined to make a large living kitchen.

“It also had a very big bathroom, which we split to create an en suite for the master bedroom and a separate house bathroom,” she says.

The interior boasts many traditional features, including mullion windows, open fireplaces, window seats and exposed beams. The house has an entrance hall, drawing room, dining room, living kitchen and cloakroom.

Upstairs, there is a master bedroom with en-suite, two further bedrooms and a house bathroom.

Outside, there is a private, gated drive and parking area, plus a double garage with a studio above. This is ideally suited as a hobbies room or additional living accommodation.

The landscaped gardens include a new Gabriel Ash greenhouse.

It’s a real wrench because I love the house and the boys have loved growing up here.

Bronwen is selling to downsize now that her sons are at university.

“It’s a real wrench because I love the house and the boys have loved growing up here.

“It is a fantastic village with a wonderful community so I am hoping not to move too far away.”

Georgina Buchanan, of Buchanan Mitchell, says: “This is a rare and exciting opportunity to acquire this unique village house.

“It is simple gorgeous and it oozes characterful charm. It is an elegant yet supremely comfortable family home with a light and gracious feel and it benefits from views of the gardens and grounds from all aspects.”

Ripley, which is between Harrogate and Ripley, is famous for its castle and for the Boar’s Head Inn, renowned for its food. It also a primary school, church, art gallery and shops including a deli and a butcher’s.
