Alison and Paul Sherratt moved into this gorgeous Georgian home on Valentine’s Day 2000 and the date could not have been more appropriate.

“We fell in love with the house as soon as we walked through the door. It was the Georgian proportions, the original features, the walled garden and the feeling that the property puts its arms around us. Buying it was a nobrainer,” says Alison, who adds that the location was also spot on.

“We had been living in Brazil where Paul was working before his career took him to Leeds. We didn’t know the area and asked friends for recommendations on where to live. They suggested we look at Boston Spa and I am glad we did.

“It is a beautiful and very vibrant village. We and our two children have loved it. There are walks by the river and every amenity you could need from doctors, a dentist and places to eat and shop.”

Since moving into their muchloved townhouse, the Sherratts have improved and added to the Grade II listed property.

The work includes rewiring and installing a new heating system, converting the basement into a multi-functional living space/ playroom/study and restoring the historic gazebo.

By far the most striking addition is a contemporary rear extension of outstanding architectural merit, which replaced a bogstandard mid-century breeze block extension.

Designed by Shaw & Jagger Architects, the cantilevered space in Corten steel and glass topped with a green roof, is home to a kitchen diner accessed from the formal dining room via an iron walkway.

The property has a hallway, a large sitting room and a formal dining room with double doors opening onto the walkway and the new kitchen/diner.

The basement houses a study/ sitting room, utility room and three store rooms. On the first floor there is a principal bedroom with ensuite and a second double bedroom with ensuite.

On the top floor, there are two large double bedrooms both and a bathroom. Outside, there is a walled garden and stone-built Georgian gazebo.

Alison and Paul are selling to move to Devon, where they are building a “Grand Design”. “We have loved living here but we have always wanted to live by the coast and this our chance to build something special there,” she says.
