Innocent continue to fight for justice

- Sharon Dale, Property editor Email:

While significant strides have been made in tackling the cladding and building safety scandal over the past few months, thanks largely to recently appointed Housing Secretary Michael Gove, they are still not enough to resolve the issues and huge financial burdens faced by thousands of innocent leasehold flat owners trapped in blighted homes.

This week, parliament debated the amendments made by the House of Lords to the Building Safety Bill, as leaseholders staged a rally outside Westminster to remind the Government that more has to be done to put an end to a scandal that has wrecked lives for almost five years.

A significant number of the amendments were dismissed by the ruling Conservative party and so the fight for justice continues.

Speaking at the rally, Leeds central MP Hilary Benn summed the situation up when he said: “Thanks to the determination of leaseholders, including those from Leeds Cladding Scandal group, we have made real progress, but we’re not there yet. No leaseholder should have to pay anything for a problem they did not create.”

It’s as simple as that and always has been.

Meanwhile, the energy crisis has hit and we will feel the full force of it later this year when the cold weather means we have to heat our homes.

The feature above sets out details of the Government’s new Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which offers financial incentives to homeowners who install air or ground source heat pumps.
