Yorkshire Post - Property

A down to earth happy place and preventing theft

- PROPERTY EDITOR

THIS weekend we take a look at the property market in Skipton, which featured at a creditable number six in Righmove’s Happy at Home Index or to look at it another way, at number one in the whole of Yorkshire, with Harrogate at number 12.

Its ranking comes as no surprise to those of us who know the market town well. It has everything going for it, from its still bustling high street with a wide variety of shops and its regular outdoor markets to its pubs and restaurants, great schools and its leisure centre and sports clubs and, of course, its railway station and its position on the doorstep of the Dales.

House prices are still relatively affordable for couples buying a terraced house or apartment, which start at about £170,000.

Values are certainly a fraction of those in Richmond, London, which topped the chart for happiness but where the average house price is an eye-watering £952,305, which means only those with lots of money can afford to buy there.

Personally, I prefer to live in a place with a diverse demographic where there is a range of ages and income streams. It’s far more interesting and more democratic.

As one estate agent mentioned, another reason why people like Skipton is that it’s “down to earth”. It is and all the better for it.

Also this week, we have a reminder to check how secure your home is. The last thing you want at this “most wonderful time of the year” is burglars. Our tips are relevant 365 days a year and we hope you find them helpful.

For those thinking about self-building, our Inside Story features a ‘Grand Design’ with no expense spared and great craftsmanship thanks to the owner, who is a gifted joiner and interior designer, whose partner also has a great sense of style.

We also take our usual look at what house prices are doing and what the future might hold for them. The message for homeowners is: do not panic. Keep calm as growth will return.
