Rams dig in to push lead­ers all the way

CHAM­PI­ONSHIP: Dews­bury Rams pro­duced a gutsy per­for­mance be­fore slip­ping to a 23-12 de­feat to big spend­ing Bet­fred Cham­pi­onship lead­ers Toronto Wolf­pack.

The Rams con­ceded three tries in a five minute pe­riod in­side the open­ing quar­ter be­fore go­ing on to pro­duce a mag­nif­i­cent de­fen­sive ef­fort as time and again they re­pelled Toronto’s ad­vances and keep them­selves in the game.

Rams got a try in ei­ther half through Dom Speakman and Paul Sykes, with former Eng­land in­ter­na­tional Sykes adding two goals.

Featherstone Rovers kept their top four hopes on track with a 38-26 win over hosts Barrow Raiders.

Cen­tre Harry Newman, on dual reg­is­tra­tion from Leeds Rhi­nos got two tries, with Luke Briscoe, Con­nor Farrell, Ian Hard­mand and Keal Carlile also cross­ing. Half-back Mar­tyn Rid­yard bagged a try and five goals.

The re­sult lifted Rovers up to sec­ond in the ta­ble, a point adrift of lead­ers Toronto, fol­low­ing Toulouse’s de­feat.

A woe­ful first half saw hosts Sh­effield Ea­gles trail Leigh Cen­tu­ri­ons 50-4 at the in­ter­val.

Ryan Miller, James Bent­ley, Os­car Thomas and Blake Broad­bent, got the Ea­gles’s tries, with Thomas adding two goals.

Former Wake­field Trin­ity winger Craig Hall got four of Leigh’s tries, as the vis­i­tors gave their top four hopes a lift with a sixth win of the sea­son.
