Rams dig in to push leaders all the way
CHAMPIONSHIP: Dewsbury Rams produced a gutsy performance before slipping to a 23-12 defeat to big spending Betfred Championship leaders Toronto Wolfpack.
The Rams conceded three tries in a five minute period inside the opening quarter before going on to produce a magnificent defensive effort as time and again they repelled Toronto’s advances and keep themselves in the game.
Rams got a try in either half through Dom Speakman and Paul Sykes, with former England international Sykes adding two goals.
Featherstone Rovers kept their top four hopes on track with a 38-26 win over hosts Barrow Raiders.
Centre Harry Newman, on dual registration from Leeds Rhinos got two tries, with Luke Briscoe, Connor Farrell, Ian Hardmand and Keal Carlile also crossing. Half-back Martyn Ridyard bagged a try and five goals.
The result lifted Rovers up to second in the table, a point adrift of leaders Toronto, following Toulouse’s defeat.
A woeful first half saw hosts Sheffield Eagles trail Leigh Centurions 50-4 at the interval.
Ryan Miller, James Bentley, Oscar Thomas and Blake Broadbent, got the Eagles’s tries, with Thomas adding two goals.
Former Wakefield Trinity winger Craig Hall got four of Leigh’s tries, as the visitors gave their top four hopes a lift with a sixth win of the season.
