Redemption for Hughes in relay
GAMES: England’s Zharnel Hughes admitted winning 4x100m relay gold was redemption after his 200m heartbreak.
The men took the Commonwealth Games title on Saturday in 38.13 seconds before the women’s team won their sprint relay, with long jumper Lorraine Ugen parachuted in at short notice to help.
The men won ahead of South Africa and Jamaica and it was glory for Hughes who collected a gold medal having been disqualified from the 200m after winning the race on Thursday.
“It’s been a long week man, but I’m still a gold medallist,” he said, after his run with Reuben Arthur, Richard Kilty and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey.
Meanwhile, Leeds’s Laura Weightman collected bronze in the women’s 5000m - behind winner Hellen Obiri.
