Redemp­tion for Hughes in re­lay

GAMES: Eng­land’s Zhar­nel Hughes ad­mit­ted win­ning 4x100m re­lay gold was redemp­tion af­ter his 200m heart­break.

The men took the Com­mon­wealth Games ti­tle on Satur­day in 38.13 sec­onds be­fore the women’s team won their sprint re­lay, with long jumper Lor­raine Ugen parachuted in at short no­tice to help.

The men won ahead of South Africa and Ja­maica and it was glory for Hughes who col­lected a gold medal hav­ing been dis­qual­i­fied from the 200m af­ter win­ning the race on Thurs­day.

“It’s been a long week man, but I’m still a gold medal­list,” he said, af­ter his run with Reuben Arthur, Richard Kilty and Harry Aikines-Ary­eetey.

Mean­while, Leeds’s Laura Weight­man col­lected bronze in the women’s 5000m - be­hind win­ner Hellen Obiri.
