Leeds City se­cure English men’s ti­tle

ATH­LET­ICS: A su­perb per­for­mance by Leeds City gave them the men’s ti­tle at the English Cross Coun­try Re­lays Cham­pi­onships at Mans­field on Satur­day.

Os­sama Meslek gave them a great start com­ing home in sec­ond place af­ter the first lap, his time of 14:59 only beaten by two oth­ers in the whole race. Gra­ham Rush (15:17) took Leeds into the lead, hotly pur­sued by Alder­shot.

Emile Cairess, (15:00), the York­shire Cross Coun­try Cham­pion, vir­tu­ally set­tled the out­come, pulling well clear leav­ing Phil Se­se­mann with a solo run on the an­chor stage. He ran 15:05 and could cer­tainly have gone quicker had it been nec­es­sary.

The Leeds B team also ex­celled fin­ish­ing 11th of the 153 fin­ish­ing teams to take the B team award. Lin­ton Tay­lor was out­stand­ing for the Leeds B team fin­ish­ing third on the open­ing stage in 15 min­utes.

In the women’s three stage re­lay won by Ton­bridge from Alder­shot, Rother­ham got well de­served bronze medals. Natasha Hatswell (9:58) came home in 11th place on the very com­pet­i­tive first stage be­fore Nicola Devine (10:13) stormed through into fourth.

Lori Hand­bury (10:05) fin­ished in style, pass­ing Shafts­bury Bar­net with ease to give Rother­ham their best ever fin­ish in this race. Their B team, 18th, took the B team award to un­der­line the cur­rent depth in the Rother­ham squad.
