Leeds City secure English men’s title
ATHLETICS: A superb performance by Leeds City gave them the men’s title at the English Cross Country Relays Championships at Mansfield on Saturday.
Ossama Meslek gave them a great start coming home in second place after the first lap, his time of 14:59 only beaten by two others in the whole race. Graham Rush (15:17) took Leeds into the lead, hotly pursued by Aldershot.
Emile Cairess, (15:00), the Yorkshire Cross Country Champion, virtually settled the outcome, pulling well clear leaving Phil Sesemann with a solo run on the anchor stage. He ran 15:05 and could certainly have gone quicker had it been necessary.
The Leeds B team also excelled finishing 11th of the 153 finishing teams to take the B team award. Linton Taylor was outstanding for the Leeds B team finishing third on the opening stage in 15 minutes.
In the women’s three stage relay won by Tonbridge from Aldershot, Rotherham got well deserved bronze medals. Natasha Hatswell (9:58) came home in 11th place on the very competitive first stage before Nicola Devine (10:13) stormed through into fourth.
Lori Handbury (10:05) finished in style, passing Shaftsbury Barnet with ease to give Rotherham their best ever finish in this race. Their B team, 18th, took the B team award to underline the current depth in the Rotherham squad.
