Triathlete Baxter earns Guiseley win
ATHLETICS: Pudsey and Bramley’s Joe Baxter won the second race in the West Yorkshire Cross Country League at Nunroyd Park, Guiseley yesterday.
Four runners broke away early in the race with Pudsey and Bramley vests prominent courtesy of Baxter and Andrew Smith.
Those two, along with Will Smith (Halifax) fought out a tight finish. Andrew Smith, with a fine record at 800m and 1500m, might have been expected to prevail in a sprint finish but Baxter, a triathlete, proved the stronger to come home by a couple of seconds with Will Smith (Halifax) in third place.
Fourth, leading City of York to a team win, was Maurice CaltonSeal.
The women’s race was won impressively by Bronwen Owen who was making her debut in the Leeds City colours following her move from Scarborough AC.
A student at Leeds Beckett University, Owen has trained with Leeds athletes for some time and is also an elite triathlete.
In yesterday’s race she broke away from her Leeds team-mate Jenny Walsh, winner of the first league race, finally finishing 150 metres ahead. Third was Helen Cross who led York Knavesmire to a team victory.
