EACH year, during the sales I seem to get so overwhelmed by the hugely discounted price tags that I panic buy and end up purchasing something that I either don’t need, don’t really like or simply doesn’t fit! How can I avoid this happening again and what bargain items should I invest in to take me through from Autumn/Winter 2012 to Spring/Summer 2013 and possibly even beyond?

We all know the Christmas sale is one of the best times to go shopping if you want to find an absolute bargain. Some of us, however, find it extremely hard to resist the temptation of the unbelievably low prices and splurge on needless items. There are a few simple things that you can do to avoid starting the New Year with an empty purse and a wardrobe full of things that you will never wear.

The first thing that I would suggest you do is create a “wish list” and more importantly set yourself a budget. Don’t be influenced by the heavily reduced price of an item when deep down you know that you don’t really need it. Make sure you only buy things that are on your list as these are the clothes that you will genuinely wear.

My next bit of advice to you would be to wear the right thing. When sale shopping it’s vital that you feel comfortable. Always wear flat shoes. If you’re anything like me, you will spend hours searching for that ultimate bargain buy and the last thing you will want to do is totter around in 6in heels.

I would also advise that you wear something that is easily thrown on and off in the changing rooms. You could decide that it’s easier to just not try the item on and then guess what? You get home and your lovely purchase doesn’t fit and even worse… its non-refundable!

With up to 70 per cent off many designer brands, you are guaranteed to find that perfect piece at a fraction of the original price. A leather jacket is always something that I would recommend investing in. They are timeless, versatile and look better with age. A designer evening dress is another item that you should grab at the earliest chance. When else could you purchase a beautiful McQueen gown with over 50 per cent off the original price? And better still… it gives you the perfect excuse for a glamorous night out! Happy shopping. x
