BRIGHT IDEAS:

With Claire Hornby

-

THERE’S a rock ‘n’ roll legend that Beach Boys composer Brian Wilson used to sit at his piano with his feet in a tray of sand to get an inspiring seaside feel for his music.

And at this time of year, you start to see why he might feel that way.

Bringing a hint of the seashore into our homes conjures up gorgeous thoughts of sunny days, fresh air and a colour palette of bright blues and pebble hues.

So I’ve been on the hunt for marinethemed furniture and accessories that can make us feel beside the seaside in our own living rooms.

Reclaimed wood is a huge trend and the Lewes Blanket Box, made from recycled pine, has a sundried wheat finish that looks suitably maritime.

It’s a perfect storage accessory for any room. It wouldn’t be a seaside theme without touches of blue, of course, in all its shades from cobalt to navy and sky.

Throws and cushions provide an excellent complement to stripped floors and pale, plain furniture, adding interest to the room and providing comfort.

I love this rustic linen cushion for its simple stripe and textured feel. Add the finishing touches with a rope doorstop and some tall candle lanterns or a ship-style pedant lamp create warming pools of light at night, and sit back to admire the castaway charm. It’s the perfect way to bring out your inner beach boy (or girl).
