Style clinic

- With Stephanie Smith

Dear Style Clinic,

My hair is now out of control with outgrown roots, untamed frizz, split ends and no shape left. What am I to do?

First, don’t panic. By which I mean don’t attempt to cut it yourself. If you really have to, get someone to snip the tiniest bit off the ends with sharp scissors. And don’t use an at-home permanent dye. Instead, use this downtime to nurture your hair with masks and treatments (try the Revlon Magnet Anti-Pollution Restoring Mask, which is nourishing and protective for coloured and non-coloured hair so ideal if you now have a good mix of both).

Moroccanoil is another great product, although for fine hair it’s best to use as an overnight treatment and wash out in the morning.

Olaplex, which many salons now use while colouring hair to preserve condition, is another excellent treatment to use overnight.

I swear by Aveda hair products, which have botanical ingredients and a divine aroma. Try Damage Remedy Daily Hair Repair (£25, 100ml), a leave-in treatment to condition, protect and smooth. There’s also the Aveda Heat Relief Thermal Protector & Conditioning Mist, which I have been using while sunbathing and attempting to blonde my roots naturally. If you do this too, try tying or clipping up the top layer or moving your parting so the underneath gets the sun too.

Avoid permanent bleach and dye but you could try temporary toners – Josh Wood and Oribe have great ones.

Finally, hang in there. The salons will be open again before too long.

You’re doing great.
