Bright ideas

- With Sharon Dale

Now that lockdown has eased and retailers have opened their doors, it’s a good time to consider how and where we shop.

While many of us have spent more time than usual analysing where we live and dreaming of how we’d love to redecorate, it’s important not to rush into buying just because you can.

It would be great to see a return to investment buying, which is what my maternal grandparents did. They didn’t have much money but they knew that if they saved longer and harder for something better, it would last.

Their three-piece suites – they were never referred to as sofa and chairs – lasted for years and I don’t think I’ve ever sat on anything more comfortable.

Some of their wood furniture is still going strong in my house, including my grandad Edwin’s oak bureau, though he would be horrified to see the contents, which are best described as “organised chaos”. Sorry grandad!

It’s also important to support local businesses. It is good for the local economy, it’s usually a pleasurable experience and the service is mostly A1.

Don’t forget the numerous artists, designers and makers in Yorkshire – our region is a hotspot for them.

If you’re struggling to find them then seek out galleries that stock them. I find this can be an excellent day out. A trip to Hawksby’s in Haworth also includes a coffee and cake in one of the many cafes, a visit to the Brontë Museum and a short walk.

Another favourite is the Masham Gallery, which includes a drive round beautiful Wensleydale.

Happy shopping!
