Money Heist

There is a reason this is Netflix’s most popular non-English language series – a slick, sophisticated Spanish crime thriller, its twisting storyline is guaranteed to keep you engaged and on the edge of your seat.

Money Heist (original Spanish title La Casa de Papel) tells the long and winding tale of a daring heist. An enigmatic figure, known only as ‘the Professor’, brings together a disparate group of eight professional criminals to carry out a raid on the Royal Mint of Spain in Madrid.

In early episodes we get flashback glimpses into the planning stages as the group are tutored by the Professor in a remote, stylishly ‘shabby chic’ villa out in the picturesque Spanish countryside. The ‘team’ consists of a pair of father and son petty thieves, a skilled counterfeiter, a bank robber, a young hacker, a jewel thief and two heavies – ex-soldiers from Serbia. Each is given a city codename – thus we have Tokyo, Rio, Helsinki, Nairobi, Moscow, Berlin, Denver, Oslo.

They break in to the Mint all dressed in red overalls and wearing Salvador Dali masks. Taking hostage the 67 people inside the building, which that day in addition to staff also includes a visiting school group amongst whom is the English ambassador’s daughter, they proceed to give them the same overalls and masks to wear. The reason behind this gradually becomes clear as the gang start to literally print their own money.

Heading up the police investigation on the outside is inspector Raquel Murillo who is dealing with some complex personal and domestic difficulties while at the same time trying to ensure the situation doesn’t end in a bloodbath...
