Pub of the week

THE GOLDEN BALL, YORK

- With Elaine Lemm

I have missed some pubs desperately during the enforced closures of the past 18 months. One is the Golden Ball in Bishophill, York.

I made no bones about this being one of my favourites in the city and was I glad to be back there just 24 hours after “Freedom Day”.

It was terrific to see all the Covid measures still in place, and on a sweltering summer evening, we headed into the delightful garden area. So did most other customers but it was all managed safely and well by the young staff, who it is always a pleasure to be served by.

I did poke my nose into the beautiful unspoilt Victorian rooms, sadly standing empty on this glorious evening, to say “hello”.

The Grade II-listed pub, tucked inside the Victoria Bar on a quiet residential street, is at the very heart of its community which continues to run the pub. One thing I spotted was there are fewer notices and events evident, though in time these will begin again, I’m sure.

What is still there is a fabulously stocked bar with all kinds of lagers and ales, including Yorkshire brews Ilkley Blonde, Ainsty Ales, Barnsley Bitter, from Acorn Brewery, and a Sprint

Train Azacca Pale. And I am happy to say there is still no food save for a few snacky items.

I’m sure this place has endured many traumatic events in its long life, and it looks like it has handled this one well too.
