In the 1870s, Macy’s developed the notion of the “holiday window display” by attractively displaying merchandise in its New York shopfront. Today many High Street shops dress their windows with scenes from the nativity, elves and reindeer, and Yorkshire firm Boyes, pictured, has a different theme each year.
