Walking into space

A dressing room is a great way to create extra bedroom space and function

Christmas has come and gone, the decorations are stowed away for another year and all that might remain to show for the festive season is a new collection of clutter.

All too often, the pleasure of receiving gifts can be cancelled out by the challenge of finding somewhere to keep them in a home where all available storage space is occupied – little wonder, then, that so many new year resolutions focus on getting to grips with this perennial problem.

Hartleys Furniture, a Skipton-based family company, are the decluttering experts, having been creating innovative storage space in homes of all shapes and sizes for more than 30 years.

The Hartleys philosophy is that no house lacks potential for the creation of extra storage space: it is just a matter of looking in the right place and applying the right bespoke design.

One part of the house which often possesses most potential for the creation of additional storage is the bedroom. Wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling fitted wardrobes are the ideal option, whether you are looking for a sleek and seamless appeal to the master bedroom, or a savvy space-saving design for your guest bedroom.

“Or why not take it a step further and create your very own walk-in wardrobe?” says Hartleys’ Sara Haggas. “Although it’s often viewed as a lavish and spaceguzzling luxury, a dressing room is easier to achieve than you might think, and it will add both functionality and value to your home.”

A dressing room allows a more organised approach to getting ready – not to mention the priceless advantage of not disturbing anyone else while you are rummaging in your sock drawer!

“It means your clothes will be properly stored away to avoid damage and creasing, while at a glance you will be able see exactly what your wardrobe has to offer you,” add Sara.

If, nevertheless, a dressing room still strikes you as indulgent – or if there is insufficient space – there are other options for additional bedroom storage.

Are there unused alcoves, usually to be found at the side of a chimney breast? If so, built-in clothes rails and shelving can provide a ‘quick win’ at modest cost.

“If your bedroom is big enough, why not divide the space with an expertly designed run of wardrobes?” says Sara. “This will create a sleek, contemporary bedroom which is practical, too.”

Mirrored furniture – of which a run of sliding wardrobe doors might be the most eye-catching, but far from only, application – not only fits the contemporary bill but serves to make a room look bigger and lighter, which is especially valuable if a bedroom is to play a multi-functional role.

Whatever your space boosting resolutions for 2022, Hartleys can help you achieve them. To book a home visit by a design team member, telephone 01756 700471 or go to www. hartleysbedrooms.co.uk
