In from the Cold
Ordinary American single mom Jenny (Margarita Levieva), who has just arrived in Madrid for an ice-skating competition with her teenage daughter’s high school team, has a secret.
It turns out that this kind, mildmannered middle-aged lady used to be Anya, a high level Russian spy and assassin known as ‘The Whisper’. She is reminded of this when she is confronted by CIA agents who force her to help them when a series of mysterious murders take place in the Spanish capital which bear all the hallmarks of the highly classified KGB experiment, of which Anya was a product. Threatened with exposure and arrest, Jenny has no choice but go along with the CIA’s demands. Cue her transformation from dowdy, cardiganwearing Jenny to glamorous martial arts expert Anya. If all this sounds pretty preposterous, it is – and it becomes ever more so as the story unwinds – but the narrative draws you in, there’s a nice parallel back story that outlines Jenny’s past, and the high-octane action set pieces are pretty impressive.
