THE HART INN, SANDSEND, WHITBY

- With Elaine Lemm

If, like me, you love walking Yorkshire’s beaches, you will no doubt be familiar with the beautiful stretch from Whitby to Sandsend, where on some days, you may even catch a glimpse of a porpoise or dolphin. The walk is a favourite any time of the year, but I love it in the winter, despite the drawbacks of inclement weather. That’s when I head for the Hart Inn, a welcoming, warm pub and a haven after being blown around outside.

The pub is cosy, without being pokey, and despite the dark wood and beams, it is still light and bright with lots of comfy seating. There’s a roaring fire for when the weather turns against you, and you can still see the beach from there.

Early in the day, it’s possible to have a pot of tea or coffee, but truthfully what we want in a pub is a pint. So, head to the well-stocked bar for a couple of regulars of Black Sheep, Greene King IPA, and a frequently changing guest ale too. Many also make a beeline for the Hart Inn for the food; I will personally attest to a cracking fresh crab sandwich the size of which – when I add in the bowl of perfectly cooked fat chips on the side – to be just what is needed after a walk. There is also a hefty menu on offer that covers many choices, dietary needs and appetites.

However, don’t keep this place just for the cold weather, though; there’s a rather lovely garden for warmer times with equally fabulous views. It’s no wonder it is a favourite.
