THE HEAD OF STEAM, SHEFFIELD

- With Phil Penfold

If you are going out and about to the theatre in Sheffield, then you cannot possibly find a place to enjoy a pint, or to have some decent food, quite as convenient for the Crucible or the Lyceum as the Head of Steam. The theatres are to the left, the Winter Gardens to your right.

The building itself was once a spacious banking hall, although today, little of the original interior architecture remains. It has to be said that, in quiet periods, it can all look (and feel) pretty sparse.

There’s one large bar devoted to serving a formidable range of beers, lagers and ciders, the majority of which are constantly changing. The Steam folk know, and love, their beers, and they support members of Camra with their loyalty cards. There was a full-bodied Tonkolo from Brew York on the other week, and some very “more-ish” ale from Hat Trick. There is even a generous 20 per cent off all takeout cask, keg, bottles and cans.

Around the bar are two walls of booths, with further seating and tables on the other pair, and there’s also a nice little area with a wood-burning stove. This section also overlooks a huge outdoor drinking space.

But the menu is where the Steam truly scores. Yes, it’s pub grub, but there’s plenty of it – everything from a rump steak to burgers, a choice of eight pizzas and some toothsome puddings. Vegans and vegetarians will not be disappointed. You can order from your table, or via the app, and it is all served until 9pm.
