Jobs to do

■ Prune raspberry canes. It’s a good time to cut autumnfruiting varieties to the ground to stimulate new canes to fruit in the autumn. Cut the tips of summer-fruiting raspberry canes that have grown beyond the top of their supports.

■ Prune blackcurrant bushes, gooseberries and redcurrants to maintain a productive framework.

■ If the soil is warm, plant early potatoes (even, perhaps, in containers) and summerflowering bulbs.

■ Mow the lawn and trim the edges; if it’s not possible to do the former, make sure you do the latter.

■ Hard-prune the likes of Buddleia davidii (pictured), sow sweet peas outdoors and lift and divide big clumps of perennials.

■ Clean ponds and pond equipment.
