Established in the 1830s by the Yorkshire Philosophical Society, the York Museum Gardens are famous for their collection of trees, shrubs, perennials, and bulbs. They include an “edible wood” and an artists’ garden with changing exhibitions. From this month, the opening hours have been extended from 9am to 6pm.
The Green Flag-awarded grounds of Lister Park feature a boating lake, adventure playground, tennis courts, bandstand and the inspiring Mughal Gardens. The centrepiece is Cartwright Hall, a gallery which is home to a collection of permanent works, from Old Masters to 20th-century British paintings and sculpture.
Cliffe Castle Museum stands in a landscaped park which features walking trails, a small lake, fountain, children’s play area, small animal section, aviary and cafe. Cliffe Castle was originally the home of Victorian millionaire and textile manufacturer Henry Isaac Butterfield.
