In the first of a new two-parter for the slow-burn and long-running Scottish crime drama, McLevy (Brian Cox) is in disgrace having been accused of killing two suspects, assaulting his Chief Constable and indirectly causing the death of Lieutenant Roach. Running out of options, the put-upon inspector boards a steamer bound for San Francisco and prepares to bid Leith farewell for good. Somewhat rashly, Jean decides to accompany him.
