On the grapevine
Value at Tesco: With belttightening now firmly in fashion, Tesco has developed a new range of wines that limbo comfortably under the £5 mark, and some even manage to scrape under £4. I have tasted through the range, and they are exceptional value for money. While I normally grade wines at this price for Monday to Wednesday drinking, these could stray into Thursday or even Friday territory. Top choice is Lateral Pinot Noir from Chile which has deep, rounded soft plum and strawberry fruit, and at £4.49 it is extremely good value. I also favour Taparoo
Valley Sauvignon Blanc Semillon which retails at £3.99. There is a terrific partner Taperoo Shiraz at £3.99 too. I am slightly astonished that I am also recommending Caparelli Pinot Grigio delle Venezie at £4.50. This grape often tastes of nothing, even at a much higher price, but this PG will go down delightfully on a Friday night after work. Unlike some Tesco deals, these prices are for everyone, not just
Clubcard holders.
Looking for a job?:
One question I am always being asked is ‘‘how did you get into wine?’’ This wasn’t my way into the wine business, but many people start by working in a shop. Majestic is a favourite, but small independents are also a great place to learn. Field and Fawcett in York is looking for a team member. Malbec time at Hoults:
As planned, I missed Malbec Day on the grounds that everyone should choose what they want to drink and when they want to drink it. However, retailers have been stocking up, so it is only polite to mention that Hoults in Huddersfield has knocked serious money off some Chakana Malbecs. Chakana Nuna Malbec 2019 is a lovely wine, deep and concentrated and it goes well with a barbecued steak. Down from £16 to £11 while stocks last. Buy lots to see you through summer.
