Dear Style Clinic

I am looking for simple, loose, easy-fitting pieces that will keep me cool this summer but still look smart and fashionable. I am not keen on print. What do you suggest?

The influx of summer fashions in store can look a little alarming for those of us who prefer not to dress in prints and patterns that remind us of cutesy gift-wrapping paper or the curtains our grans used to have, so it’s a relief to see that many stores do have plenty of light pieces that do not make your eyes go funny.

My first port of call is always Cos, and this beautiful jumpsuit in dark green is made in Tencel, lyocell and linen, so it’s cool to wear and easy to wash. The gathered neck and sleeves, and the adjustable drawstring waist are lovely details, and this would look brilliant by itself with flat sandals or dressed up with heels and a jacket.

Talking of jackets, I have decided that a statement jacket in a striking shade is an excellent way to create an eye-catching yet simple ensemble for going out and special occasions this summer. This green linen blazer from Mint Velvet oozes the relaxed but sophisticated look I for one will be going for – and I will be easy to spot in a crowd (if it’s good enough for the Queen). There are wide trousers and a bodice top to match, in case you fancy doing matchymatchy.

The black Per Una dress is one to wear on repeat. In pure cotton, it’s loose without being a tent, and you can style it up to take you pretty much everywhere. A bargain.

OUT OF PRINT: From top, green linen jacket, £139, at Mint Velvet in Harrogate and concessions; pure cotton midi dress, £39.50, Per Una at M&S; green jumpsuit, £89, at Cos.
